Re-experiencing Acrylics

One medium I haven’t agreed with for a long time was acrylic paints. I didn’t like the way it laid down on surfaces. It always felt like it lacked the luminosity that oil paints offer. I didn’t like that it dries fast so I never get to work on it the way I prefer to.

However, circumstances change and I thought I needed to try it again. I needed a more convenient and a safer setup because I have a very curious toddler who hovers and prefers to gets involved with any activity I am doing. And so I thought to give acrylics another chance.

I was inspired by an artist mother who was interviewed on a podcast I usually listen to while working. Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember her, nor which podcast it was! She had very young kids at that time and did small paintings when she has small pockets of time. She then stops the painting no matter what stage it was when an interruption from her children happens. It inspired me to make small acrylic paintings which encourages a faster working pace, a process where acrylics shine because of their fast drying properties!

And so I re-experiences arcylics, this time I tried different paint brands and found ones I loved! I used Derivan Matisse Structure and Golden Soflat paints in these pieces. My recent experience of this medium has changed because of how amazing these paints were!

After choosing the paints, I ordered the surface I prefer working on. I thought I ordered regular board panels but I was surprised to see that I ordered MDF printing blocks instead! And so another opportunity for experiments has presented itself. I thought I can carve into these boards and see how it can add interest on these pieces I planned to make.

My subjects were a mix of themes I also wanted to explore. I did florals, abstracted landscapes, geometrics, seascapes and underwater scenes. I wanted to find out which subjects I prefer to focus on at this time.

Most of the final pieces were carved but some were not because I was too eager to slap the paint on these boards. I am definitely an acrylic convert now and I am hoping to go further with my acrylic experiments in the coming months.

For now, here is my most recent collection. I hope you enjoy this the way I enjoyed creating them!
